Incident in Hotan, Xinjiang

Yesterday, Xinhua reported that rioters in Hotan (Xinjiang) had been “gunned down” after they raided a police station and took hostages. Reuters, The Washington Post, Radio Free Asia and others followed and contrasted Xinhua’s version with a statement by Dilxat Raxit of the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress. He claimed that the local police had opened fire on a peaceful protest against a recent seizure of land, which then led to a violent clash. Radio Free Asia apparantly, tried to find out more by calling local police stations in the region, but officers declined to give details.
